THE REIGNING Junior Calypso Monarch in the 8-12 category, Summa Sargeant, is getting ready to defend her title this year.

Summa, who won the 2016 title with a song called Go Away Recession, will be coming this year with Potholes. Both songs were written and arranged by Paul Billboard Murrell.

Summa said she was looking forward to being on the big stage again this year and would be doing her best to retain her crown. “I always have fun when I am singing and performing; I get nervous but it goes away once I begin to sing. I will definitely give it my all again,” she said.

The nine-year-old pupil of Blackman and Gollop Primary School also won the prize for the Best Soca song in last year’s competition. She recalled that her most memorable performance since winning the junior crown was in Trinidad for Carnival in February.

“I went with Chad De MC Montplaisir who won the 13-18 category and we performed there. I really enjoyed that experience. I liked that I was representing Barbados and that I got to see how they do their show there. It was different but I liked being there,” said Summa.

She will be kicking off her Crop Over season by making an appearance at Crop Over In The City on June 1. (PR)
