Pic-O-De-Crop monarch Aziza is looking forward to defending her crown.
She was the second woman to win the calypso crown and the former junior monarch was also the youngest person at 21 years old to cop the monarchy with the popular One People, One Nation and Bring Back Respect.
“Of course I’m defending my title. I’ve come too far to stop now. One of my songs is Still Standing which Viper wrote but as for the name of the other one . . . no comment. I will probably release it after the semi-finals. As the reigning monarch, you know how it is,” the calypso queen said with a chuckle during a recent interview with WEEKEND BUZZ.
“Last year was great. There were lots of positive vibes. It was going well. I performed more than I normally would. I performed over 30 times in the last year at schools and other events, but I mostly did work for the Barbados Tourism Management Inc. and I went to Trinidad with Merle Niles,” she said.
Aziza whose real name is Aziza Clarke, won both categories of the Junior Monarch competition. In 2007, performing under the moniker Li’l Az, she won the 8 to 12 title and three years later, in 2010, she was crowned queen in the 13 to 18 category as Aziza.
She is a member of the Cave Shepherd All Stars calypso tent.
The Pic-O-De-Crop semi-finals take place on July 22 and the finals on August 5, both at Kensington Oval. (GBM)
